There are a lot of good reasons to install artificial turf in a school or community park. However, there is a dirty little secret when it comes to artificial turf manufacturers and how they sell turf.

Artificial Turf Manufacturers Say That Artificial Turf is a 100% Maintenance Free Solution.

Facilities that replace real grass fields (natural turf) no longer need to mow and water. While that is a true statement, it is also misleading. Artificial turf is not maintenance free and requires grooming, debris sweeping, and disinfection. In addition, artificial turf needs seem repairs and additional infill material added regularly. Neglecting the maintenance of your artificial turf field could expose children and athletes to harmful bacteria. Possible infections from MRSA, Staph, and even HIV are possible. School Boards and other purchasers of artificial turf need to start asking the right questions about turf safety. Start by understanding the 5 C’s of Staph transmission as recognized by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) out of Atlanta.  The CDC is the world leader when it comes to infectious disease and public safety.

Further Explanation of the Meaning of the 5 C’s

  1. Crowding – Artificial turf fields are usually in use year-round. As a way to make them cost-effective, many high school fields provide a playing surface for both football and soccer teams. As you can see, overcrowding quickly becomes an issue.
  2. Contact – Sports played on artificial turf most likely involve some form of contact, football, lacrosse, rugby, and soccer.
  3. Compromised Skin –  Contact sports like football and soccer are notorious for leading to minor abrasions, cuts, and scrapes. Turf burn is of special concern and is not preventable in physical sports like football or soccer.
  4. Contaminated Surfaces – Bodily fluids from blood, mucus, and saliva are very common on playing fields. Unbeknownst to other athletes, these bodily fluids live on the turf from unknown people.
  5. Cleanliness – In addition to bodily fluids which fields absorbed, fields are often cluttered with pens, shoe spikes, feathers, and other litter which can cause even more skin abrasions and cuts.

Artificial turf manufacturers need to educate potential customers that maintenance required. They need to quit selling artificial turf based upon this false, “No Maintenance Needed” claim.  Parents and athletes ask facilities, how do you sterilize the turf? Let these facilities understand the legal liability they face.  If these facilities are aware of the potential health hazards and fail to act, they could be held legally accountable. They now have moms and a liability lawyer to deal with!

However, the ozone layer absorbs most of these rays which allows life to live on the Earth. Concentrated UVC light used on artificial turf fields is safe for humans. The applied UVC light will only kill the harmful microorganisms and bacteria that may cause disease and infection.  Artificial turf manufacturers need to embrace the truth and amend their sales pitches so customers may be informed about potential hazards instead of proliferating lies.
